History of Beekeeping
One of the oldest practices in the world of beekeeping, given the way this practice has changed over the years, we realize how important beekeeping in ecologically unstable world today.
The world of bees is facing a number of problems today. Looking back, we find that the bees have played an important role in our development. They are an integral part of the system that has helped us to maintain over the years and no bees, which would certainly not have been able to live life today.
Another fact that demonstrates the importance of bees is that they are kept by humans since time immemorial.
The first recorded history of beekeeping can be found in cave paintings in Spain and Africa, representing images of people in the hives of bees collecting honey. These paintings are as old as 15,000 years. It is amazing indeed to find that the bees have been an indispensable part of our lives forever.
Through the ages, the only reason why the man has kept bees for the wax and honey, Apart from being used as an anti bacterial agent, honey was also used to sweeten a wide variety of beverages and foods such as bread and wine.
Wax, however, was used to make mead was a drink made by monks in monasteries, candles, medicines and as binders in paints. Hives have been created for the purpose of beekeeping for quite some time.
In places like Nepal and Africa, people still follow the traditional method of collecting honey from wild hives. Over time, people began to realize that the maintenance of hives offers immense benefits are one of the reasons for its popularity today.
The practice of collecting honey in the hives of base is also present in one of the earliest civilizations, Egypt. Any place that was dark and closed was enough for the swarm to settle.
You can also find many references to beekeeping among the ancient Greeks and Romans. The old beehives however had a major drawback. Time was collected honey from the hives of the colonies were destroyed by beekeepers.
19th century saw the emergence of the first comb hive. This section was created by an Italian immigrant based American Lorenzo Lorraine Langstroth. A book called “The Bee Hive”, published in 1853 served as an inspiration that led to the creation of the hive comb.
This book had a detailed description of how to find the “bee space”, which is more than the distance between combs created by bees naturally so they can move through.
The modern hive allowed the extraction of honey without damaging the colony and also allows you to examine and inspect the individual panels. Today, thanks to Langstroth, bees can be used for various purposes including the pollination of huge areas of farmland.
The amount of food we produce today is only possible with the help of bees and devices such as hives comb to significant large-scale practices towards the promotion of agricultural development.
